How do you know when you have enough information in your abstract? A simple rule-of-thumb is to imagine that you are another researcher doing a similar study. Then ask yourself: if your abstract was the only part of the paper you could access, would you be happy with the amount of information presented there?
For a research paper, an abstract typically answers these questions: Purpose: What is the nature of your topic/study and why did you do it? Methods: What did you do, and how? Results: What were your most important findings?
Banality, irrelevance, plagiarism, and plain old madness will get any abstract rejected, no matter how good it is. Similarly, if your ideas are brilliant, pointed, original, and sane, you have a hard road ahead of you. Even the worst abstract may not suffice for rejection.
An abstract should be brief, concise, objective and balanced. It is a "just the facts" presentation of the research with major emphasis on conveying methods and main results so that readers are able to understand the basis of the "take home" messages that are expressed in "conclusions".
- We often leave writing them to the very last second, but the abstract is arguably the most important part of your paper. ...
- Not having a clear rationale.
- Using improper tense.
- Using too much hyperbolic language or jargon.
- Failing to state a conclusion.
An abstract summarizes, usually in one paragraph of 300 words or less, the major aspects of the entire paper in a prescribed sequence that includes: 1) the overall purpose of the study and the research problem(s) you investigated; 2) the basic design of the study; 3) major findings or trends found as a result of your ...
